Crypto Split: Why Institutions Are Sticking to Bitcoin While Retail Chases Memecoins

Crypto Market Splits in Two: Big Money Chooses Bitcoin, Retail Runs to Memecoins

Institutions Stick With BTC and ETH, Retail Goes All-In on Altcoins

The crypto market is undergoing a major transformation in 2025, and it’s becoming crystal clear: institutional investors and retail traders are no longer playing the same game.

According to a new mid-year report from global crypto trading giant Wintermute, the crypto market is bifurcating. Institutional money is flowing heavily into Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) — the two largest and most established cryptocurrencies — while retail investors are increasingly chasing riskier altcoins and meme tokens.

Institutional Investors Are Doubling Down on BTC and ETH

67% of Institutional Trading Focuses on Top Two Coins

Wintermute’s data shows that institutional investors remain firmly anchored to BTC and ETH, with 67% of over-the-counter (OTC) spot trading volume concentrated in these two assets.

Why? Experts point to the recent surge in crypto ETFs and structured investment vehicles, especially those making BTC and ETH more accessible through traditional financial platforms. For institutional players — hedge funds, banks, and large asset managers — Bitcoin and Ethereum are now treated like macroeconomic assets, much like gold or government bonds.

“This isn’t just a temporary phase,” said Evgeny Gaevoy, CEO and founder of Wintermute. “It’s a sign that we’re seeing a more mature and specialized crypto market.”

Retail Shifts Focus to Altcoins, Memecoins, and Speculation

BTC/ETH Holdings Down from 46% to 37% Among Retail Traders

While the pros are getting conservative, retail traders are going the other way. In the first half of 2025, Wintermute found that retail investors have reduced their BTC and ETH exposure from 46% to just 37%. Instead, they’re pumping their money into newer, high-risk tokens — often driven by social media hype and FOMO.

This divergence isn’t accidental. Retail investors are chasing faster gains and are drawn to the “next big thing” in crypto. These often include micro-cap altcoins and memecoins with viral potential — even if they’re highly volatile.

“Institutions are playing the long game. Retail traders are still drawn to innovation and potential moonshots,” Gaevoy added.

Traditional Finance Is Entering Fast — With Confidence

TradFi OTC Trading Volume Up 32% Year-over-Year

Wintermute’s report also highlighted that traditional finance firms are the fastest-growing players in OTC trading, with a 32% increase in trading volume over the last year.

This is thanks to clearer regulations in major markets:

  • U.S. GENIUS Act is giving legal structure to stablecoins and trading practices.

  • EU’s MiCA framework is rolling out a regulatory playbook for crypto across Europe.

These moves are giving Wall Street the green light to join the game — but they’re doing it quietly and efficiently through OTC desks and derivative strategies rather than public exchanges.

Crypto-Native Firms Are Pulling Back Slightly

In contrast, Wintermute noted that crypto-native firms saw a 5% drop in OTC activity during the same period. This might reflect the fact that early adopters are taking profits, or repositioning after the massive altcoin rallies seen in late 2024.

Still, retail brokers (like crypto trading apps) saw 21% volume growth, showing that retail appetite for crypto remains strong — especially for speculative plays.

Explosive Growth in Derivatives and Exotic Products

OTC Options Volume Up 412% in First Half of 2025

One of the biggest trends in the institutional space is the massive growth of derivatives.

Wintermute said OTC options volume jumped 412% compared to the first half of 2024. These tools are favored by big investors who use them to hedge risks or enhance yield.

Contracts for Difference (CFDs), which allow access to less liquid tokens with smaller capital requirements, also doubled in diversity, letting investors bet on a wider range of niche tokens without actually owning them.

Memecoin Mania: Dogecoin Loses Ground to Popcat and Dogwifhat

Retail Traders Go Deeper Into the Memecoin Rabbit Hole

Wintermute’s data reveals an interesting twist in the memecoin trend. While total retail trading in memecoins dropped slightly, the number of unique tokens being traded actually doubled. That means individual investors are spreading their bets across a broader range of new and obscure coins.

Once-dominant names like Dogecoin (DOGE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB) are losing momentum. In their place, tokens like Bonk (BONK), Dogwifhat (WIF), and Popcat (POPCAT) are gaining traction among a new generation of meme traders.

“Retail traders are experimenting more,” said Gaevoy. “There’s a growing appetite for micro-cap assets in the long tail of the market.”

What’s Next? Dogecoin ETF Decision Looms

Wintermute’s report ends with a key development to watch: a final decision on a proposed Dogecoin ETF is expected by October 2025. If approved, it could be a game-changer for the retail sector, legitimizing memecoins and opening the door for similar ETFs focused on altcoins.

“This could set the stage for the next big retail wave in crypto,” the report said.

 A Two-Speed Crypto World

The crypto industry in 2025 is no longer a unified market. Institutions and retail investors are moving in different directions, each drawn to different assets, tools, and strategies.

  • Institutions want safety, regulation, and scalability — and they’re sticking with Bitcoin and Ethereum.

  • Retail traders want hype, speed, and viral success — and they’re diving into altcoins, memecoins, and micro-caps.

As the regulatory environment matures and new products like ETFs roll out, this bifurcation may grow even stronger.
